House Passes Revised Bailout Deal

The Senate tonight overwhelmingly passed the economic rescue package, or Wall Street bailout, as a way of forcing the House of Representatives to take a second vote on the bill, which it rejected in different form earlier this week.

"I commend the Senate for tonight's strong, bipartisan vote," Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said in a statement on the 74-25 vote. "This sends a positive signal that we stand ready to protect the U.S. economy by making sure that Americans have access to the credit that is needed to create jobs and keep businesses going. I urge the House to act promptly to pass this bill."

Deliberations took place behind the scenes Wednesday, as senators added breaks and sweeteners to their version of the economic rescue plan.

For many, the delicate negotiations were like walking a tightrope, as senators attempted to add enough enticements to win Republican House members' support, while still maintaining support from Democrats.

Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain left the presidential campaign trail, and vice presidential contender Sen. Joe Biden interrupted his preparations for Thursday's debate against Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, to be on hand for the vote.
