Default AI gets traded to Detroit ....

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The promised shake-up has come to the Pistons.

The Pistons have traded guard Chauncey Billups, forward Antonio McDyess and center Cheikh Samb to the Denver Nuggets for guard Allen Iverson.

He was asked if the Pistons were going good at February’s trade deadline, would he be hesitant to make a change. His answer was direct.

“We’re not playing for things to go well,” Dumars said. “We don’t show up and say we just want to be good. We want to compete for an NBA championship. If you say that, you have to be willing to put it out there and take a chance.”

Dumars didn’t wait for February. Monday he traded point guard Chauncey Billups, power forward Antonio McDyess and center Cheikh Samb to the Denver Nuggets for guard Allen Iverson.

Billups came to Detroit in 2002 and helped bring home an NBA title in 2004 and spearhead six straight appearances in the Eastern Conference finals.

“It’s hard to say how much it’s going to change the team,” Dumars said Monday at Time Warner Cable Arena, where the Pistons played Charlotte. “I know it gives us a different dimension.

“It gives us a different way to attack people. We have been extremely successful for a long time, but I also think along with that comes a little bit of predictability.”

Billups, 32, is a spot-up jump shooter, while Iverson, 33, is smaller but quicker and is known for slashing to the basket and making frequent trips to the foul line.

Iverson will report to Detroit Tuesday for a physical and a news conference and will join the team for Wednesday night’s game at Toronto.

Coach Michael Curry said he plans to move Iverson into the starting lineup at point guard. And when he brings Rodney Stuckey off the bench, he will move Iverson to shooting guard.

Curry said: “We get a chance to get a first-ballot Hall of Fame player. What he brings to the table for us is his speed and quickness with the basketball. He helps us in the area of getting into the paint, winning the battle of the free-throw line with the amount of fouls that he draws.”

McDyess, 34, could return to the Pistons this season if he and the Nuggets agree to a buyout of the $15 million remaining on the two years he has left on his deal.

Nuggets vice president of player personnel Rex Chapman told the Rocky Mountain News that Denver intends to keep McDyess, who was originally drafted by the Nuggets with the second overall pick in 1995.

Iverson’s contract, worth nearly $22 million, expires at the end of the season. His agent, Leon Rose, told the Associated Press he is not negotiating a contract extension with the Pistons for Iverson, who said during camp he was looking forward to being a free agent for the first time.

Billups, who is from Denver, is in the second year of a four-year contract worth $46 million with a team option for a fifth year. McDyess, in his 13th NBA season, spent his first two seasons with the Nuggets.

Pistons player Kwame Brown said Billups will be missed.

“Chauncey was a big part of this program,” he said. “With the short amount of time we had, I got a chance to see his leadership and why he’s important to this team. Guys are hurt, but it wasn’t in our hands.”

Power forward Rasheed Wallace said he was just hearing about the trade this morning and didn't have much to add. He did think aloud about the possibility of adding a former NBA scoring champion in Iverson.

“Another scorer back there with Rip (Hamilton) … we'll see how it plays out,” Wallace said. “I can't comment too much. That's not a Guaransheed right there, so I can't comment too much.”
