Atletico sack Aguirre as Resino comes in

Atletico Madrid have sacked Mexican coach Javier Aguirre and plan to replace him with Abel Resino who is in charge at second division Castellon.

Aguirre was dismissed by club board member Miguel Angel Gil Marin and Resino is in the Spanish capital negotiating a contract, Cadena Ser radio reported.

An Atletico Madrid spokesman said the Primera Liga club had no official comment at this time but would issue a statement on its website.

Resino, who turned 49 on Monday, is a former Atletico goalkeeper who had brief spells as coach of Levante and Ciudad de Murcia.

Atletico have not won a match this year and slipped to seventh in the standings, five points short of the Champions League qualification places, after a 2-1 home defeat by Real Valladolid on Sunday.

Aguirre joined the Madrid side from Osasuna in 2006 and became the first coach since they returned to the top flight in 2002 to last more than one campaign.

Atletico have just over three weeks to find some form before the Champions League first knockout round gets underway. They host Porto in the first leg on Feb. 24.

I have no clue tho is Resino better.
