The first proper "best-of" from Cypress Hill arrives
nearly 15 years after their debut, a surprisingly long
time considering how compilation-happy their parent
label, Sony, has been. Whatever the reason for it, the
wait for this comp was entirely worth it, since
Greatest Hits from the Bong is filled with top-notch
tracks and saves the consumer from having to purchase
the group's disappointing albums -- Temples of Boom, IV
-- while leaving enough of their classics -- Skull &
Bones, Black Sunday, and their nearly perfect debut --
unheard until the decision is made to dig further. The
mostly chronological layout may seem dry, but it
displays the growth of the group and all the
risk-taking and genre-blending that happened along the
way. Raw gangsta tracks and hedonistic odes to pot
smoking give way to reggae-influenced numbers, layered
Clash samples, and more intricate smoking songs. Two
new tracks toward the end -- the Ambrosia-sampling "The
Only Way" and the tight and hardcore "EZ Come EZ Go" --
offer something new for the regulars and while "EZ" is
very good, "Only Way" is a hooky triumph. Including the
reggaeton remix of "Latin Thugs" with Tego Calder¾n is
a very 2005 move, but it's a hot track and if there
ever were a hip-hop act that seemed a natural for the
reggaeton explosion, it's this Latin, reggae-loving
crew. With a running time of less than 50 minutes and
the lack of an essay or words from the band, Greatest
Hits from the Bong isn't perfect, but being all killer
and no filler, it's close enough.

And the bong loads just keep getting packed deeper and
deeper...even if no one really cares. On their fourth
album of herb-induced hip-hop, the once-interesting,
now-derivative trio turns itself over to the world of
played-out beats and rhymes. Tired tales of guns,
gangs, and of course, weed fire up Cypress Hill IV,
making it sound more like a lame attempt at a reunion
gig than the next chapter in the revitalization of
their career, which it should be. Worse, they've added
stupid sex raps to their repertoire, dulling their edge
and throwing Cypress Hill into the discard pile with
countless other once-relevant hip-hoppers. Still, the
sonic landscape that they trudge across here is
occasionally sprinkled with some wild scenes. The
Godzilla-like screams of their debut have been replaced
by slinkier, more bass-driven beats, but there's also a
lot of aural action going on in the background. Which,
alas, doesn't quite compensate for the overriding
flaws.

"While Cypress Hill's Skull & Bones album showcased
their sudden interest in merging hard rock with rap,
Live at the Fillmore stands as a better testament to
the group's newfound ability to synthesize the two
styles into an invigorating formula. The album gets off
to a fiery start with some rowdy renditions of the
group's early-'90s material -- "Hand on the Pump," "How
I Could Just Kill a Man," "Insane in the Brain" --

"Cypress Hill have always been one of the most popular
hip-hop groups in Latino circles (most of the group
have a Hispanic background), so an album of Grandes
Exitos en Espanol makes much more sense than it would
for Method Man or Jay-Z. For anyone who doesn't
understand Spanish (especially fans who have heard all
of these productions, but one, before), the album is
occasionally diverting just to hear the group rhyming
in Spanish. "Insane in the Brain" becomes "Loco en el
Coco," "How I Could Just Kill a Man" becomes "No
Entiendes la Onda," and "I Wanna Get High" becomes "Yo
Quiero Fumar." The bonus track is "Siempre Peligroso,"

On Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom, Cypress Hill
sounded a little tired, clinging to their slow, druggy
beat a bit too much. The Unreleased & Revamped EP was
released a few months after the album, which signals
that the EP is an attempt to salvage their reputation.
That suspicion is confirmed by the list of remixers and
collaborators. None of the guest musicians -- from the
Fugees and A Tribe Called Quest to Redman, MC Eiht, and
Erick Sermon -- are traditional West Coast rappers.
They are musicians who are pushing the boundaries of
hip-hop in 1996. In another attempt to restore their
street credibility, Cypress Hill have distanced
themselves from the alternative rock audience they
cultivated through an appearance at Lollapalooza and
with Temples of Boom. So, the group has clearly tried
to make a break from its trademark sound, and its
attempts are marginally successful. "Boom Biddy Bye
Bye," which features a remix from the Fugees, is
particularly successful, but most of the EP contains
the germs of an idea, not the fruition of one. Still,
the EP is encouraging to long-term fans who may have
thought that Cypress Hill had lost the plot with
Temples of Boom. Unreleased & Revamped suggests they
are about to get back on track.

Take a hit from the band who became both notorious and famous for theirRnotes
endorsment of marijuana.
Cypress Hill with their slow, rolling bass lines and drum loops pioneered a
new stoned funk sound in '90s hip-hop.
Their first two albums are classics featuring hits like "I Wanna Get High",
"Insane In The Brain", "Hits From The Bong" and "How I Could Just Kill A
Man". More recent albums like Skull & Bones and Stoned Raiders heard
them trying to merge rap with rock.
Producer Muggs has had an active career outside Cypress Hill, producing
the likes of Ice Cube, Tricky and House Of Pain. He also presented his
own Soul Assasins project and - to coincide with this J Files - put out his
first solo album called Dust.
