New Jersey Set to Legalize Mary Jane

The Assembly Health and Senior Services Committee approved the medical use of marijuana for chronically ill patients to relieve symptoms of pain and nausea in New Jersey on Thursday.

The vote was approved by an 8-1 vote with two abstentions. If the law reaches Governor Jon Corzine's desk and passes, New Jersey will be the 14th state to clear "compassionate medical" use of the herb, reports WPIX.

If the piece of legislation gets signed into law, a doctor will be required to issue a certifiable statement that confirms the patient has a chronic illness. Patients with clearance to smoke the herb will be given an identification card allowing them to grow up to six plants or purchase the buds from alternative medicine centers.

Middlesex Police Chief, James Benson, says legalization "will lead to increased marijuana use, increased crime, and an increased threat to public safety."

In sharp contrast, co-sponser of the bill State Senator Fred Scutari believes, "It will be the most restrictive law in the U.S. ... with the most safeguards in terms of abuse."
